Something Hopeful

I’d like to write something hopeful
as it is a New Year,
I’d like to write something of comfort,
yes, comfort not fear.
I see the news delivering words of destruction,
piercing hearts with thorns of terror,
and although I want the facts
I need a break from the gloom,
I need a break from their pedalling
of impending doom.
2020 started fast and hard
death’s cloak at speed advancing,
but there was time together,
long walks embraced by nature,
and some very cheesy dancing.
When the clock struck 12 at midnight and
2021 commenced
all problems weren’t erased
and peace and health and perfection
couldn’t be restored.
But from the mess and muddle
I hope that something new
has begun,
that through
the haar and wind and sleet
we will still plod on
and even skip eventually.
I hope
that the good can’t be extinguished
that the spark of creativity will be
fostered, kindled, nurtured,
into a never ending sparkler of freshness
a never ending story, not written by the Brothers Grimm.
In this year,
in the future,
in our long walk through
the mountains,
we’ll emerge
to the smell
of pine and heather
and the taste
of berries and beauty
and we’ll see
the way anew.
